Through the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, Zimbabwe School of Mines (ZSM) is positioned as a strategic enabler for mining operations. With a heritage dating back to 1926, the School has evolved into a Centre of Excellence serving the Southern African Development Community and is the first tertiary institution in Zimbabwe to attain ISO 9001 certification, validating its operational systems and strategic transition.

The most persuasive argument for ZSM’s relevance is its hardware and infrastructure. The school has moved beyond theory into high-tech application.

Building a world-ready mining workforce

In an industry racing toward automation and digitalisation, ZSM has positioned itself not merely as an educational institution but as a vital enabler that de-risks investment through superior human capital.

Transformation into a 4th generation mining institution

Aligned with the National Development Strategy 2026–2030, ZSM is producing graduates who are digitally competent and comfortable with the convergence of mining and technology.

Its flagship Diploma and Higher Diploma programmes produce hands-on technical practitioners and strategic industry leaders.

Core three-year diplomas include Mining Engineering, Geology, Mine Surveying, Metallurgical Engineering, Mine Ventilation and Environmental Engineering, Iron and Steel Making, Foundry Technology, and Mine Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Management.

Two years of campus tuition are complemented by a one-year industrial attachment, ensuring graduates are field-ready.

Higher Diplomas offered through a flexible blended learning model integrate strategic leadership modules, transitioning technical experts into managerial roles.

Future-focused programmes and digital expansion

Through its Distance Learning Centre, ZSM offers Diplomas in Oil and Gas Engineering, Executive Diploma in Mine Management, Jewellery Manufacturing and Gemology.

Initiatives such as the Drone Training School and MineTech Innovation Hub equip students with autonomous surveying, 3D modelling, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things skills.

The experimental mine and laboratories

The 212-hectare Experimental Mine in Inyathi features an underground gold mine and processing plant, transforming students into active participants across the mining value cycle. Partnerships with ZCDC, MPC and Fidelity Gold Refineries validate this hands-on approach.

The Metallurgical and Analytical Laboratory, targeting ISO 17025 accreditation by 2026, features high-precision ICP-MS, XRF and Spark Analyser instruments.

Strategic partnerships for industry impact

Through collaboration on infrastructure, research and skills development, ZSM ensures graduates meet real-world mining needs. For the global mining community, Zimbabwe School of Mines represents a strategic operational imperative: investing in expertise that drives productivity, sustainability and responsible mining practices.
